Gaslamp
Quarter
The Gaslamp
Quarter is one of San Diego's most historic areas, and is the historic
heart of San Diego. The area is characterized by a blend of both old and
new buildings, as well as the old fashioned gaslamps that still light
the streets.
The Gaslamp
District got it's start in the 1800's. In 1869, Alonzo Horton built a
wharf at the end of 5th Avenue, beginning the commercial boom in that
part of San Diego. Businesses started moving in, as well as prostitutes
and gamblers. When businesses started abandoning the area, the Gaslamp
Quarter became a redlight district, called the Stingaree. In 1912, a police
crackdown in the Stingaree effectively shutting down the red lights.
Today, the
Gaslamp Quarter is a haven for tourists. Shops, restaurants, art galleries,
and theaters now line the streets. At night, the streets come alive, the
many walkways and sidewalk cafes illuminated by the old fashioned gas
lamps. Walking, trolley, and horse drawn carriage tours are available
in the Gaslamp Quarter, so you can be sure to see all the sights, and
take in San Diego's history.
